Learning outcomes:
Students will develop their technical skills parallel to their project studies. The renovation of old buildings, as well as the use of sound and heat insulation and energy principles are important technical characteristics that will be developed this module. The renovation of old buildings: involves documenting a building, its construction and history, investigating and evaluating the damage and defects found, and developing an approach for dealing with it as the basis for a design concept. These issues will be dealt with theoretically in lectures and accompanied by practical work on site. Sound- und thermal insulation: At the same time, students will acquire knowledge about sound and thermal insulation and energy principles, as well as practical competence for creating energy- and resource-efficient designs, new construction tasks and conversions in existing buildings. Students will be trained in the systematics of public-law calculations and certificates for residential buildings and their use with regard to their own designs with the aim of teaching interdisciplinary contexts.

The renovation of existing buildings: introduces specific problematic issues that arise during maintenance, modernization, renovation or conversion. Introduction - building survey: methodology and documentation Historical building materials: wood, natural stone, brick, mortar and plaster, casting and iron, concrete - techniques and survey examples Presentation of historical constructions, such as: Hist. wooden constructions: Half-timbered, beamed ceilings and roof trusses / Development, damage and renovation - Historic natural stone masonry: Walls and vaults / Development, damage and renovation Historic brickwork: Cellars, walls and facades / Development, damage and renovation Historic concrete structures in the 20th century / Development, damage and renovation Historic iron structures in the 20th century / Development, damage and renovation Hist. construction elements: Windows and doors / Development, damage and renovation Sound- und thermal insulation: Sound and heat insulation certificates, Energy Saving Ordinance EnEV, basic understanding of the legal and technical background of the current EnEV, Energy Saving Ordinance. Knowledge about verification procedures, legal standards and their application. Energy certificates for new and old buildings, contents of on-site energy consulting, subsidy programs, methodology and preparation of energy certificates for housing construction.
