After successfully completing this module, students will be have basic knowledge of conceptual design, they will be able to solve requirements of function, construction, design and space in simple tasks.
They will be able to analyze a given building structure with regard to its strengths and weaknesses and adapt it to today"s quality standards.
Students will be able to recognize the connections between functional, constructive, design and spatial aspects in refurbishment/upgrade tasks and will be able approach architectural solutions conceptually by incorporating these connections.
The built environment is largely completed and the construction tasks concentrate mainly on building within an existing structure. It is therefore a question of discovering and correctly evaluating the potential of this existing stock in terms of its history, genius loci, structure, construction and character. The new, changed requirements call for a repertoire of conceptual design tasks using skills such as inserting, separating-connecting, layering, adjusting, modernizing, transforming, extending or rebuilding. Students must be able to solve these tasks while taking the above parameters into account.
Using a simple functional program within the context of the existing building stock for formulating and solving the architectural concept.
