After successfully completing this module, students will be able to identify and understand the principles, systems and processes involved in the provision of drinking water. They will be able to plan and design drinking water treatment plants depending on the raw water quality, as well as calculate pipe networks for distribution, elevated tanks and supply systems.
- Requirements for drinking water; water quality: water hardness, lime-carbonic acid balance;
- Methods of drinking water treatment: a) mechanical/physical: raking, grit chambers, filtration, gas exchange, b) chemical/biological deferrization, demanganization, deacidification, desalination;
- hydraulic calculation of water supply networks (pump and pipe characteristics);
- Designing elevated ground tanks and water towers;
- Dimensioning urban supply lines
