Learning outcomes:
After successfully completing this module students will: • be able to answer questions about the essential functions, business models and players in the energy industry • be able to identify the major change processes in the energy industry during the last decades and list them • characterize today´s electricity supply system from a historical perspective, in the present as well as in terms of future prospects • put essential developments and problem points of the liberalization of the energy industry and the energy transition into the overall context and subject them to a critical analysis and evaluation • successfully complete an examination to become a European energy trader

Module content:
1. The structures, functions, actors, institutions and political frameworks of today´s energy industry will be presented in detail. The emphasis will be on change processes in the energy sector and their effects, especially through deregulation, the nuclear phase-out, the energy transition, climate protection and the coal phase-out. 2. The energy industry will be analyzed from the perspective of politics, economics and science, in some cases with external input from experts from the SaarLorLux region. 3. An intensive training course on exchange trading will provide an in-depth overview of all sub-markets, framework conditions of exchange trading, trading products and price formation processes of the European Energy Exchange (EEX). In addition to the module exam, students can complete all of the academic assessmenst (exams, etc.) required to become an official European energy trader with trading authorizations on the energy exchanges in Paris and Leipzig (EEX - European Energy Exchange/ EPEX European Spot Exchange).

Teaching methods/Media:
• The lectures will be held using slides and will be enriched by external contributions, as well as daily political topics. The trader training takes place using official scripts from the Energy Exchange as well as trading simulation software.
