Learning outcomes:
After successfully completing this course, students will be familiar with investigating, assessing, securing and remediating contaminated sites. Building-related aspects (e.g. construction in existing contexts, land recycling) will be emphasized Students will have a clear understanding of soil protection issues and be able to expand their knowledge independently.

Module content:
This module provides knowledge from the following areas: - General connections and effects of soil pollution/definitions/soil science - Legal basis/Federal Soil Protection Act - Regional survey and initial evaluation of suspected areas/information management - Site-specific preliminary investigations (historical exploration, data on natural regions) - Digestion method/scope of analysis/relevant parameters/preparing samples - Risk assessment using relevant reference value lists (including BBodSchV - Federal Soil Protection and Contaminated Sites Ordinance) - Remediation planning - Procedures for securing hazardous wastes (horizontal/vertical systems, immobilization, excavation/relocation) - Remediation methods (reactive walls, soil vapour extraction, hydraulic measures, washing methods, thermal treatment, biological treatment)
