Learning outcomes:
Proficiency - After successfully completing this module, students will: • broadened their knowledge about technical basics with regard to the investigation, assessment, securing and remediation of contaminated sites. Structural aspects (e.g. "building in existing contexts", "land recycling") will be emphasized here. Skills - After successfully completing this module, students will be able to: transfer or apply soil protection concepts to unknown one-dimensional tasks and problems (application). Competencies • Foreign students will be able to deal with the cultural differences in Germany and operate successfully in the country using their country-specific and linguistic skills and knowledge.

• General connections and effects of soil pollution/definitions/soil science • Legal basis/Federal Soil Protection Act • Regional survey and initial evaluation of suspected areas/information management • Site-specific preliminary investigations (historical exploration, data on natural regions) • Digestion method/scope of analysis/relevant parameters/preparing samples • Risk assessment using relevant reference value lists (including BBodSchV - Federal Soil Protection and Contaminated Sites Ordinance) • Remediation planning • Procedures for securing hazardous wastes (horizontal/vertical systems, immobilization, excavation/relocation) • Remediation methods (reactive walls, soil vapour extraction, hydraulic measures, washing methods, thermal treatment, biological treatment)
