Learning outcomes:
This seminar with research workshop focuses on the in-depth examination of methodologies/research styles of qualitative research, broadening students´ knowledge of survey and evaluation methods, and the development of their own (evaluation) research project, which will be presented by the students in a detailed exposé.
After successfully completing this module, students will:
- have an overview of the spectrum of methods and the development of methods for data collection. They will be able to self-reflectively assess their own methodological competence after receiving their Bachelor´s degree and learn new methods (e.g. discourse analysis, network analysis);
- be able to determine the relevance, contexts of use, prerequisites and limits of survey methods in a differentiated manner;
- be able to explain the quintessence of the most important qualitative research methodologies or research styles (especially with regard to data evaluation) and name relevant research and evaluation studies;
- be able to cooperate constructively in the form of a research workshop during planning, implementation and especially during evaluation and reflect critically on their collaborative work;
- be able to apply case study methodology in terms of its key dimensions (especially in terms of case comparisons, sampling strategies, method triangulation);
- be able to develop their own qualitative (evaluation) research project (case study), as well as justify and present it convincingly with regard to all their steps and defend it in an academic discussion.

Module content:
- Systematic overview of methodology/research styles and methods of qualitative research
- Advanced data collection and data evaluation
- Advanced case study methodology, especially with regard to comparative case studies (including case selection (sampling), method triangulation, etc.).
- Experience with qualitative methods of data collection and analysis with special attention to the appropriateness of the subject matter, potential and limitations of such, including questions pertaining to research ethics.
- Development of an (evaluation) research project that students will present in a detailed synopsis (module thesis).
